Cinematographer, director and producer Govind Nihalani talks about his association with Shyam Benegal, Satyadev Dubey and VK Murthy, and his decision to make a career in films. Mr. Nihalani has an impressive list of films (feature and TV) to his credentials right from Ankur and Gandhi to Tamas to Thakshak.

This is the first episode of our conversation with Mr. Nihalani. Each week we will bring you a new episode where Mr. Nihalani talks about cinematography, his films and the Hindi film industry.

 

In Part-I we begin with Mr.Nihalani's association with Mr. Shyam Benegal and Mr. Satyadev Dubey, and the development of his Socialist sensibilities.

Mr. Nihalani grew up in Udaipur, Rajasthan, and after completing his high school enrolled in a film school in Bangalore about 45 years ago. Films left a deep impact on him when he was growing up in Udaipur. He was allowed to see only mythological films and the dramatic story-lines of these films had him captivated.

After he graduated from Shree Jaya Chamrajendra polytechnic in Bangalore, he relocated to Mumbai and went straight to the house of Mr. V.K. Murthy, cinematographer for Guru Dutt's films like Sahib, Bibi Aur Gulam, Pyaasa and Kagaaz Ke Phool among others. He landed his first job with Mr. Murthy, and Mr. Nihalani went to on establish his indelible presence in Indian cinema.

Mr. Nihalani currently lives and works in Mumbai.
